Photon Bunching at TeV Energies

چکیده

Harwit, Protheroe, and Biermann (1999) recently proposed that BoseEinstein photon bunching might significantly affect the interpretation of Cerenkov counts of TeV gamma photons. Here, we show that a combination of two recent results of Aharonian et al. (2000) and Aharonian et al. (2001) permits us to set new, more stringent upper limits of ∼< 10% on the fractional amount of photon bunching in the 7-10 TeV radiation from Markarian 501. Potential bunching at even higher energies should nevertheless continue to be investigated for this and other TeV sources, since a clear understanding of TeV energy spectra is required to unambiguously determine the spectral energy density of the mid-infrared extragalactic background. Subject headings: gamma rays: observations; BL Lacertae objects: individual (Markarian 501); radiation mechanisms: general; infrared: diffuse radiation

TeV Cherenkov Events as Bose-Einstein Gamma Condensations

The recent detection of gamma radiation from Mkn 501 at energies as high as ∼ 25 TeV suggests stringent upper bounds on the diffuse, far infrared, extragalactic radiation density. The production of electron-positron pairs through photon-photon collisions would prevent gamma photons of substantially higher energies from reaching us across distances of order 100Mpc. However, coherently arriving T...

Gamma - gamma absorption above a molecular cloud torus in blazars

Gamma rays have been observed from two blazars at TeV energies. One of these, Markarian 421, has been observed also at GeV energies and has roughly equal luminosity per decade at GeV and TeV energies. Photon-photon pair production on the infrared background radiation is expected to prevent observation above ∼ 1 TeV. However, the infrared background is not well known and it may be possible to ob...

Resolved Photon Contributions to Leptoquark Production in e + e − and eγ Collisions

We calculate the resolved photon contribution to leptoquark production at eγ colliders for the center of mass energies √ s = 500 GeV and 1 TeV. We also calculate the resolved photon contribution to leptoquark production at ee colliders for the center of mass energies √ s = 1 and 2 TeV. In both cases we find that these contributions are considerably larger than the standard contributions conside...

Ultimate luminosities and energies of photon colliders ∗

A photon collider luminosity and its energy are determined by the parameters of an electron-electron linear collider (energy, power, beam emittances) and collision effects. The main collision effect is the coherent e+e− pair creation. At low energies (2E< 0.5–1 TeV) this process is suppressed due to repulsion of electron beams. In this region Lγγ(z > 0.65) ≥ 1035cm−2s−1 is possible (1033 − 1034...
